It has been a long week for us here in IFD. Anna and the kids have done every arts & craft, game or activity possible in attempt to stave off “stuck-in-the-house-because-of-rain” madness. The sun came out today so we are basking in the rays and sobering to the reality of nasty humidity. If 100% humidity is a real thing, then its here in this forest.
Tim has spent most of his days writing and translating lessons for new believers and leaders in the church. The lessons are simple but foundational. We cannot assume that the new believer here in the rainforest has any knowledge of the Word except that which we teach them because no one here has been making disciples of Jesus. There is a lot of religion here, but most of it is rooted in tradition and teachings passed on from the ancestors.
The AKZ group is taking a big step this Sunday when they will choose men from among them to enter into a leader discipleship course. Those selected must live lifestyles in keeping with 1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1 to be considered as future pastors or deacons of the church. Varying opinions exist on the missionary’s role in helping a group choose it’s leader. Tim has decided that the lessons learned by the group are sufficient for them to meet, pray, worship and choose leaders this Sunday in his absence. We want the believers in AKZ to be self-governing, autonomous, independent of outside influence, able to rightly interpret the Scriptures and apply them to their lives. The selection of leaders in Tim’s absence is a step toward their autonomy.
- For AKZ believers to listen to the Holy Spirit in the time leading to choosing leaders.
- For AKZ to regard the Bible as their highest source of truth as they learn how to have an abiding relationship with Jesus.
